Richard Olsen's book looks at the roots of the "green" architecture movement and profiles incredible dwellings from around the globe, including - yep - Big Sur. (In fact, our boss's home is in the book.)
Photography by photographers: Lucy Goodhart and Kodiak Greenwood.

“Today we experience increasingly standardized and commodified homes and lives. In this beautifully written and illustrated book, Richard Olsen shows us another way—a path toward beauty and comfort in harmony with nature.”— Sim Van der Ryn, Emeritus Professor of Architecture, College of Environmental Design, UC Berkeley and former California State Architect
“This tale is a lot more than hippies and hot tubs.... Olsen provides a thorough history of the owner-built, woodbutcher movement from places like Big Sur, California, and Prickly Mountain, Vermont. And he addresses the sources of handcraft construction: Buddhist architecture of Japan, Norwegians cabins, Sea Ranch in California, Gaudi, Maybeck, and Jung, to name a few). Works from Europe and Australia provide an international context.”—William Morgan, Architectural Record
“Handmade Houses gives a rich overview of both the imagined and tangible world of building. Its spirit of optimism and enthusiasm echoes that of the 1960s when art and craft were one, and closely linked to social and political issues. Richard Olsen shows that it is once again a relevant partner in our society’s search for meaning.” —James Hubbell, Artist
